  • Recycled Projects turn into Earth Day Treasures

Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can. – Arthur Ash

Todd Jones, a teacher at Corsicana High School, gave creative freedom to his Introduction to Welding students when he told them to design and construct projects for an Earth Day auction using only recycled metal.  Several of his 65 students were initially uncertain of the possibilities until the creative juices got flowing with piles of scrap metal.

A Facebook posting to the community requesting scrap metal for the students’ projects laid the foundation for what would inspire lawn ornaments, a rocking chair, candlesticks, a coffee table, inspiring word-art and other artistic pieces.

“The student learning experience has been incredible to watch. They have been learning all about different metals and how to work with them, welding angles, problem solving, etc.,” said Jones.  “To see the students excited about their projects has been fulfilling, and knowing that they have used scraps to make something new, is a great demonstration of recycling.”

A custodial staff member, who has been watching the projects develop, proposed a project himself.  He asked if the students could make him a fishing pole holder from the scrap material.

“Of course they can! These students are learning to solve problems using available resources and skills,” said Jones.  “This has been a great experience.  As beginning welders, I am impressed by the creativity and effort.”

The community is invited to Corsicana High School on Earth Day, Sat. May 5 from 9am- 12noon to see and bid on the student projects.  Money raised will go back into the welding program.

  • Corsicana High School 2018 Graduation Date Announcement

    CHS 2018 Graduation

Sat., May 26, 9:30 am, Tiger Stadium

The Corsicana ISD Board of Trustees approved the Corsicana High School 2018 graduation date of Saturday, May 26 at Tiger Stadium. The graduation ceremony has traditionally been held on Friday night.  Shade Boulware, Principal of CHS, said the recommendation comes after visiting with students, parents and faculty about graduation improvement.

Several reasons resulted in the decision to change from an evening to a morning ceremony. One reason cited is time for family and friends to travel.

“There are many family and friends who come a long distance to see their loved ones graduate,” said Boulware. “This will allow additional time for guests to arrive in Corsicana.”

Other reasons for the change include logistics and planning for bad weather. “Our students really want to have graduation at the stadium so all family and friends may attend. If we needed to delay the ceremony for weather conditions, Saturday gives us some flexibility where Friday night gives us none.”

“This is an important event for our students, families and community. We want to make this an accessible event for those who want to come, as well as an event that is safe for our students and guests.”
